Frequently Asked Questions About Traditional Thai Massage

Q: What do I wear?
A: Yoga/Athletic clothing works best, but really anything that allows full range of motion, with a thin material that's easy to work through. No heavy sweats. No jeans. No cargo pants. etc.

Q: What if I don't have any experience with yoga?
A: Traditional Thai Massage does have a common ancestry with yoga, and recieving Thai Massage on a regular basis, while also practicing yoga regularly, do complement each other outstandingly well. However many people hybridize the two, usually calling it Thai Yoga Massage or Thai Yoga Bodywork. This is VERY different than the traditional practice, focusing more on stretching and generally approaching it more as an assisted yoga than a form of bodywork. Traditional Thai Massage focuses more on compression and accupressure, as well as an array of other soft tissue manipulation techniques, with some stretching involved.

Q: How is this different than Swedish or Deep Tissue massages?
A: This is a fully clothed practice on a mat on the floor instead of a table. There is no oil or lotion, and therefore, no gliding. Rather than being limited to thumbs, hands, forearms, and elbows as with the Western modalities, Thai Massage therapists also use feet, knees, and even the body to apply correct pressure to the correct place. This is done more effectively on the floor, as the client's and the therapist's bodies can be positioned to more effectively deliver that pressure to the correct body part.

Q: I've tried several forms of Western massage, which ones can help me relate to Thai Massage?
A: When treating the soft tissues of the body, there is much potential for common ground. Trigger Point Therapy can overlap with Accupressure, for instance... which can in turn overlap with Thai Massage. If you've ever experienced these modalities, Thai Massage will have a few less surprises in store for you. It also shares common ground with Deep Tissue, Sports Massage, Rolfing, and Myofascial Release.... as well as Eastern practices like Shiatsu or Tui Na.

Q: Is Thai Massage safe if you are pregnant?
A: Yes! But please inform Eric of how far advanced you are so that he can adjust his treatment accordingly.

Q: Does it hurt?
A: Much like the more familiar Western table massage practices, this depends on the therapist, the client, and the condition of the body going into the massage. Traditional Thai Massage is a very thorough and rigorous therapy, leveraging deep into the body to release tension at it's origins. This can cause pain, especially in the beginning and after long breaks, but any pain that may occur does decrease as the body becomes more accustomed to the work it is receiving.
